Windbreak Establishment

  1. Windbreaks may be necessary to establish a good stand throughout the growing season.
  2. Atlantic coastal panic grass and alkali sacaton are two low-maintenance perennial grasses easily established as windbreaks when planted in strips throughout the field.
  3. Sterile male sorghum can be planted and used as a green windbreak the first year and a dry windbreak the second year.
  4. Wheat can be planted in the fall, then killed with foliar active herbicides, such as, glyphosate, just before heading.
  5. As always, read the label before applying any herbicide.
